Let's Wed Yellow Dot PatternWhat is the inspiration behind your business?

I’ve always had an eye for design, particularly graphic design. I graduated from Virginia Tech in 2006 with a degree in Industrial Design and went on to work for a textile manufacturer as a textile designer.  As my friends began to get married and have children, I became the go-to girl for invitations and other paper goods. This is when I discovered my true passion for stationery design, and thus, {Paper}Dolls Design was born.

What is your favorite part about creating wedding stationery?

My favorite aspect of wedding stationery is how different it can be! I’ll have one bride want the most classic, elegant more formal suite and the next will want the total opposite with a really fun story behind it!  I find that I can really read a person through their stationery style and taste, and I love getting to know such different personalities!

What do you love most about Hampton Roads weddings?

I love how though most weddings are based around the “beach” itself, there are so many other venues here that aren’t near the water! From country barn weddings, to modern hipster weddings in the City — l love how different each wedding can be, but at the heart and soul is born in HRVA!

What are some of your favorite pieces of stationery that you have designed?

These are my top 3 fav suites! I love how they’re all so different, but still beautiful!

How do you match the invitations to the different wedding themes?

Most often times, I ask the bride (and sometimes groom!) to send me ideas and inspiration that they’ve seen online, in addition to meeting with them to get a sense of their style/taste. Once I have their venue, wedding colors and general aesthetic down, I’m able to match the paper goods with their wedding theme. For example, a couple that is getting married at the beach can have very vast tastes— I’ve had some incorporate the more “generic” icons, such as shells, waves, and seahorses, while other “beach” brides just want a coastal nod and won’t incorporate any icons! Colors and fonts can really help to achieve the look/style that you want!

What do you do love to do in your free time?

Since having a child almost 2.5 years ago, my free time is few and far between! Honestly, my “work” is my free time and what I LOVE to do! It works out for everyone 🙂 If you can’t find me behind my MacBook with my Wacom Tablet, I’m most likely at the beach or finding new and fun ways to decorate our home— Pinterest is the best thing and the worst thing for all of us!

What is the best piece of advice you can give to a couple who is searching for a stationery & paper goods designer?

While it may seem easiest to order your paper goods online, please contact a local designer first! Most of us are competitive in terms of pricing, and all of my brides tell me how wonderful it is to meet a “real life” person and see a REAL sample of their invitation suite instead of ordering sight-unseen online!
