What led you to photographing weddings?
My own wedding photographer actually! I fell in love with our engagements and wedding images so much that it opened my eyes to artistic side of commercial photography. I was always a fine arts nerd and never really considered photographing people. Amanda Hedgepeth is not only a friend but her images changed the course of my life 🙂
What is your favorite part of the wedding day to document?
Oh my gosh, there are so many… but I LOVE the last few moments as the bride gets into her dress. The anticipation and just how BEAUTIFUL she looks!
What do you love most about Hampton Roads weddings?
Honestly, Hampton Roads has GREAT wedding vendors. I have met some really great people just by working with them at a wedding or venue.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I love learning and improving. When I learn how to do something new it inspires me to put in more work. I know that sounds a little crazy. But constantly watching tutorials, mentoring, podcasts, you name it. I want to learn all the things! I constantly search for that feeling of a “new favorite” image.
Can you share with us three of your favorite images from weddings you’ve shot and why you love them?
- The bride. I love in-between moments of her getting ready that are not planned or posed!
The couple. I live for those tight romantic images.. the ones where you can feel the love and see the happiness! A little adventure with the veil is always fun too…makes for some nice texture and softness to the image.
- The look. I love a good black and white and OH, the way he looks at her!
What is your absolute favorite Hampton Roads venue to shoot at and why?
I recently shot a wedding at Mimosa Farms on the Eastern Shore. Its small and simple, but I love organic details and a blank canvas that the bride can really customize for their own wedding. Gimme all the pretty outdoors and organic textures!
What are some great personal touches you have seen in weddings you have shot?
Leslie from the Mimiosa Farm Wedding had some amazing DIY details! From invitations, to place cards, even her dress was made by her mother. It was incredible!
What do you do in your free time to relax?
I love spending days off with my Husband and two girls. We rarely get a quiet day just the 4 of us…..well as quiet as it gets with a toddler who loves dinosaurs 🙂
What is the best piece of advice you can give to a couple who is searching for a wedding photographer?
Pretty pictures are important, but A LOT of people take pretty pictures….. so really think about what type of personality you want with you for the entire day. We are in the room when the bride gets ready, we witness the most intimate moments…. it’s really important that there is a good personal connection there and that the couple is really comfortable and confident. There is the perfect photographer match out there for everyone! Some couples might want someone more quiet and reserved, and some might want someone crazy like me that will hug your mama or cry during the first dance!
