Spring is here, summer is almost upon us and wedding season is in full swing!! Many local brides are in the midst of planning their weddings (for this year or next), so I wanted to share a few types of flowers that will be perfect for you to use for your Hampton Roads spring or summer wedding! This is not an all-inclusive list of spring or summer flowers; I am simply highlighting a few focal flowers that will really make your flower arrangements “pop”!

Spring and very early summer are the best time to use ranunculus! Ranunculus are one of my favorite flowers, and their name may sound completely ridiculous, but these little beauties pack a punch! Their ruffled, delicate petals open up to create a super complex look, and along with their multiple colors, they can go well with almost any color palette. They also have naturally curly and delicate stems, so these flowers are best handled by a professional florist! Their petite flower heads make for perfectly sized boutonnieres or easily make a statement in a bouquet or table centerpiece!

Tulips are quintessential spring flowers that always amaze me when they open up in the sunshine! They also come in many different colors and varieties, and they can have double petals, fringed petals, and many other options. They add a touch of whimsy to any bouquet, and can add a fun pop of color to any type of arrangement. A fun fact about tulips is that they continue to grow, even after they have been cut! So, if you are planning on using them in a DIY bouquet or table arrangement, keep this in mind!

May and June are the perfect time to use a wedding favorite: the peony! This gorgeous, fluffy bloom becomes readily available around Mother’s Day and their season ends towards the end of June. Peonies do have a short season, and they are more sensitive to work with, meaning they do carry a higher price tag, but they are worth it! They can be shipped in at other times of the year (no guarantees), but they won’t have the same glorious shape and scent as the May and June peonies will. However, if you’re a fall bride wanting peonies, don’t despair! Garden roses are available year-round, and several varieties are regularly mistaken for peonies, with the same lush shape and scent. If you have questions about peony substitutions, send me an email- I would be happy to chat with you!

So one more thing I wanted to talk about is actually not a bloom, but rather a plant. Dusty miller is a muted green/bluish plant that is actually available year-round, as it is grown locally, here in Hampton Roads! I love the texture and fuzziness of this plant, and you may be familiar with its cousin, “lambs ear”, which has the same soft texture as dusty miller! It provides a soft look to your wedding palette, which I think perfect for someone who has a more feminine or romantic wedding theme. Since it is locally grown, it’s a relatively hardy and easily located plant and perfect for wedding work!
