What led you to photographing weddings?
As cliché as it sounds, my own wedding experience!! I was just starting out in the photography industry while I was planning my wedding. I knew I loved photography but I didn’t realize how much until my own engagement session. I remember the way I felt after I left and I just knew it was my job to make people feel that way!
What is your favorite part of the wedding day to document?
Oh my gosh. Do I really have to answer this question?! If I have to pick I’d say when the groom first sees his bride. That could be during a first look (my favorite!) or when she’s walking down the aisle to her soon-to-be husband. If the groom cries, that’s totally a plus! I love me an emotional groom. Such pure emotion.
What do you love most about Hampton Roads weddings?
The diversity of the venues! I’ve shot at the ocean front, lake front, river front, historic landmarks, botanical gardens, barns and hay fields, corn fields, sunflower fields, little quaint bed and breakfasts’, huge modernized hotels… the list goes on. Where else can you get that?!
Where do you find your inspiration?
Honestly, all over, including myself. I love looking at my own work, past and present, and seeing shots that I absolutely love and even ones that I truly dislike. It helps me grow. It helps me figure out my style; what I like about my work and want to continue shooting, and what I need to improve on. That’s another thing I love about photography: there is ALWAYS room for growth. Even the leaders in the industry grow and learn on a daily basis. Below is a shot from one of my first weddings and one of my recent weddings.
Can you share with us three of your favorite images from weddings you’ve shot and why you love them?
This image is of my bride reading her letter from her future husband. So much emotion, so much my favorite!
I’m including this image because who doesn’t love a redhead bride in a stunning floral chair? Lindsey was so much fun!
This image isn’t a fancy portrait, and didn’t even make it in their blog post, but I love it because it’s so REAL! It was POURING raining on their wedding day, but these two were determined to stay happy and have amazing portraits on their wedding day. This is what I love!
What are some great personal touches you have seen in weddings you have shot?
Every one of my brides has such amazing style and has done some pretty unique things! Since I’m a huge dog lover, I absolutely loved this Doggie Treat bar my sweet couple Ashley + Daniel had at their wedding! It was something I’d never seen before which is rare these days.
What do you do in your free time to relax?
I soak up family time with my husband and my two littles! I have a 2 year old and a 5 month old so they keep me pretty busy! I can not wait for Fall weather for pumpkin patches, hot chocolate, and the kick off of the holiday season (Halloween totally counts!!).
What is the best piece of advice you can give to a couple who is searching for a wedding photographer?
Find someone who you can relate to on a personal level. Someone who understands you for who you are and what you are envisioning for your wedding day. I’ve been so lucky to have booked some amazing couples. I can honestly say that I’d hang out with all of them outside of being their photographer, and that’s because they found someone who they can relate to and we just clicked! 🙂
